धुमा धूमवती धूम्रा धूम्रपानपरायणा ।
धौता धौतगिरा धाम्नी धूमेश्वरनिवासिनी ॥
अनन्ताऽनन्तरूपा च अकाराकाररूपिणी ।
आद्या आनन्ददानन्दा इकारा इन्द्ररूपिणी ॥
धनधान्यार्त्थवाणीदा यशोधर्मप्रियेष्टदा ।
भाग्यसौभाग्यभक्तिस्था गृहपर्वतवासिनी ॥
Goddess Dhoomavati is 8th in mahavidya krama. She's the eternal silence after the pralay. She's the ultimate void which absorbs the consciousness itself. She's the one without a consort. Her upasana is done by yogis and tantriks to kill the mind and get ugra vairagya. She gives kapal moksha like chinnamasta. Her laukik prayogas are done to exterminate hordes of enemies, evil spirits, demons, poverty, diseases and get saubhagya. She's always hungry and ready to eat one's durbhagya if offered in her winnowing pan.
She has her extensive krama tantra practices which involve a lifetime of upasana. Which go from shaktabhishek to purnabhishek in the vidya of kakadhwaji. One can attain supreme state of shunyata and samadhi through her continuous upasana.
Her first upasaka was rushi pippalad. He did her siddhi and had used her against the devatas to get revenge on Saturn. He worshipped her through vedic atharvana krama (dhoomrakrutya) and also through tantrik path. In current age Jalandhar peeth or Jalandharnath prokta Dhoomavati and charpatbhanjan or charpatinath prokta Dhoomavati are in common practice. Both are aghor and shabar paddhati respectively. They're quick acting and extremely fierce. Both don't require nyasas and other angas of extensive upasana. These are usually employed in prayogas against the enemies. The siddhakrama or shabar and aghor paddhati mantras are for quick results and Kamana purti but cannot replace the ultimate tantrik kramas which lead one to final enlightenment.
Now when we study the shastrokta upasana paddhati of dhoomavati, we find the following features:
She is represented as a widow, i.e. without a consort or Shiva. In tantrik ugra prayogas she is paired with Aghor rudra or Aghor bhairav. In saumya karmas she's paired with kalabhairav. Her Ganesh is Dhoomra Ganapati or vashya Ganapati in some cases. The yakshini who holds her vidya is Bhishani. The batuk who leads her retinue is Veeresh or ekapaad.
Across the tantrik literature we find 9 main scriptures for dhoomavati worship which include:
Kalamrityu tantra , dhoomra varahi kalpa, saubhaagya dhoomavati kalpa, Ugra dhoomavati kalpa, kubjikopnishada, saubhagya kanda of atharvan veda, mahAtharvan samhita, akash bhairav kalpa and fetkarini tantra. Her prayogas are also given in mantra maharnava, mantra mahodadhi, meru tantra and Sharada tilak.
She has 29 upasana murtis or forms. Which are as follows:
1) kaaka-dhoomavati
2) vashya dhoomavati or mohini dhoomavati
3) uchchAtana dhoomavati
4) trailokya mohinI dhoomavati
5) ugra dhoomavati
6) saubhagya dhoomavati
7) dhoomra varahi
8) dhoomrastra rupini or dhoomra krutya
9) raavanopasita murti
10) indrajitopastia murti
11) adinathopasita murti
12) charpatinatha Upasita murti
13) avdhootopasita murti
14) kaakachandesheshwari murti
15) vidveshanakari dhoomavati
16) jyeshthaa dhoomavati
17) kakaroodha dhoomavati
18) ratharudha dhoomavati
19) dhoomrakshi murti
20) vatsalya dhoomavati
21) dandahasta dhoomavati
22) shoorpahasta dhoomavati
23) shivabhakshini mahogra dhoomavati
24) shabar dhoomavati
25) vairagya dhoomavati
26) atharvan dhoomavati
27) pashchimamnaya kubjikaangabhuta dhoomra murti
28) Urdhvaamanaya dhoomavati
29) Jaalandhar peeth dhoomavati or Aghor dhoomavati.
Out of these jyeshtha dhoomavati, saubhagya dhoomavati, shoorpahasta dhoomavati and vaatsalya dhoomavati can be worshipped by gruhasta or householder. Rest of the forms are for Yogi and tantriks to attain kapal moksha, samadhi or to do prayogas on others.
There are 12 Anga vidyas of goddess dhoomavati which are as follows:
(1) Veeresh
(2) Batuk
(3) Shiva
(4) Pratyangira
(5) Sharabheshwara
(6) Pashupataastraa
(7) Samhaaraastra
(8) Kukkutee
(9) Markalikaa
(10) Maaranee
(11) Tvaritaa
(12) Kullukaa panchaka
Her prayogas are usually done in smashan. If doing the ugra prayogas at home then one should bring ashes from cremation grounds and spread them below the asan. Similarly during the prayog, one should not even have a glance at saubhagyavati female's kumkum don her forehead or else she gets widowed . There's an exception for saubhagya dhoomavati and vaatsalya dhoomavati. Usually black clothes and colours are selected for her sadhana. Ideally the rosary is mahashankh but in case of unavailability rudraksha or black agate can be used. She requires good offerings which are 5 times the normal offering for any other deity. Usually spicy food is offered. In vamamarga hardcore pancha makaras are to be offered. The time for her prayogas is between 10 pm -3 am. Like this there are many peculiarities in her sadhana.
Finally to conclude:
Dhoomavati is an extremely potent mahavidya who's mantra are veeryavaan in kaliyug. So she gives kshipra siddhi. Her major job is to take jivatma into the supreme silence. And in laukik prayogas to remove biggest obstacles. She's 100% gurugamya vidya. Never to be practiced without initiation. Many people have seen negative effects after doing her sadhana without initiation. But when done under guidance and protection of able guru with full knowledge and spiritual resources then she becomes spearhead in breaking the walls of fate, there by giving the unimaginable success in spiritual and material life.
