Vishnu shodashanama strotra


A verse of 16 names of Lord Vishnu is presented below. In this, under which conditions a man should remember Lord Vishnu by which name, it has been mentioned: -


औषधे चिंतयते विष्णुं, भोजने च जनार्दनम।

शयने पद्मनाभं च विवाहे च प्रजपतिं II

युद्धे चक्रधरं देवं प्रवासे च त्रिविक्रमं।

नारायणं तनु त्यागे श्रीधरं प्रिय संगमे II

दु:स्वप्ने स्मर गोविन्दं संकटे मधुसूदनम्।

कानने नारसिंहं च पावके जलशायिनाम II

जल मध्ये वराहं च पर्वते रघुनन्दनम्।

गमने वामनं चैव सर्व कार्येषु माधवम् II

षोडश एतानि नामानि प्रातरुत्थाय य: पठेत।

सर्व पाप विनिर्मुक्ते,विष्णुलोके महियते II


auṣadhe ciṃtayate viṣṇuṃ bhojane ca janārdanama |

śayane padmanābhaṃ ca vivāhe ca prajapatiṃ II

yuddhe cakradharaṃ devaṃ pravāse ca trivikramaṃ |

nārāyaṇaṃ tanu tyāge śrīdharaṃ priya saṃgame II

du:svapne smara govindaṃ saṃkaṭe madhusūdanam |

kānane nārasiṃhaṃ ca pāvake jalaśāyināma II

jala madhye varāhaṃ ca parvate raghunandanam |

gamane vāmanaṃ caiva sarva kāryeṣu mādhavam II

ṣoḍaśa etāni nāmāni prātarutthāya ya: paṭheta |

sarva pāpa vinirmukte,viṣṇuloke mahiyate ||

sarva pāpa vinirmukte,viṣṇuloke mahiyate ||


(1) while taking medicine - Vishnu;

(2) At the time of eating - Janardana;

(3) While sleeping - Padmanabha:

(4) At the time of marriage - Prajapati;

(5) At the time of war - Chakradhar;

(6) At the time of travel - Trivikram;

(7) At the time of leaving the body - Narayan;

(8) With wife - Sridhar;

(9) At the time of having bad dreams in sleep - Govind;

(10) At the time of crisis - Madhusudan;

(11) At the time of trouble in the forest - Nrisimha;

(12) At the time of fire crisis - Jalashaayi;

(13) At the time of crisis in water - Varaha;

(14) At the time of trouble on the mountain - Raghunandan;

(15) In journey - Vamana;

(16) While doing all other remaining work - Madhav.


By reciting this Vishnu shodashanama stotra with devotion every morning, one becomes free from all sins and reaches to the divine feet of Vishnu. One becomes entitled to go to vaikuntha.
